Single stage refrigeration systems
capable of only -40°C are simpler and more
reliable than refrigeration systems that can
go colder and provide the advantage that
they are able to operate without a nearby
source of coolant. Large loads and fast
ramp times also require systems with
much larger, more expensive refrigeration
systems. A single L-N2 valve can provide
cooling for several thousand watts removal
and easily achieve temperatures down
to -100°C.
Two stage cascade systems that go below
-40°C are more expensive and complicated.
They are also more prone to requiring
expensive maintenance than L-CO2/L-N2
systems. Autocascade systems achieve the
lower temperatures with less components
and motor losses, they have less failure
points than cascade systems with separate
compressors. They still have complexities
and their own set of service issues such as
refrigerant cost and the need for uniquely
skilled technicians. \\

So, the initial cost and simplicity of
systems with use of expendable coolants
are generally far favorable. Especially when
counting in electricity costs, maintenance
requirements and faster test-time
capabilities. L-N2 or L-CO2 heat removal
capacity is superior without using an
exceedingly large compressor system and
the ongoing maintenance costs are much
lower, however the drawback of
