Sensors
monitoring locations of interest at a
fraction of the cost of conventional HUMS
systems. CAN-MD vibration sensors can be
used one or two at a time on a turboprop
application, for example, or up to 31 nodes
per CAN bus for larger applications.
Additional CAN bus channels can be added
using low-cost CAN controllers to achieve
channel expansion in data acquisition
systems that support CAN input capability.
Putting the signal processing capability in
the sensor opens up a wide world of
options that were not possible before the
advent of CAN-MD. \\

CAN-MD
Developer Kits are
available to explore
the technology and to
aid in the integration process. Along with
preconfigured hardware, Developer Kit
users receive a copy of the CAN-MD
Interface Control Document (ICD), a
detailed description of how the sensors
communicate with the bus. The ICD
enables integration with existing CAN
data recorders and avionics systems with
CAN support. CAN-MD customers have
successfully integrated the platform to
existing digital architectures, bringing
high-level machinery diagnostics to their
maintenance. Each sensor on the bus
can see information from every other
sensor and use the new information
provided by those nodes to make new
computations and generate new CIs. Each
sensor can see multiple tachometers on the
bus to enable time synchronous averaging.
Other sensors such as IEPE accelerometers,
high temperature piezoelectric
accelerometers, optical and magnetic
tachometers or optical blade trackers can
be brought to the CAN-MD domain to
create a “sensor fusion” environment.
Software engineers with a basic
understanding of CAN protocols will have
no trouble integrating CAN-MD sensors to
cockpit displays, machinery control
devices, data acquisition systems, and
other devices that are CAN enabled or that
