Among the largest cost burdens to any airline is
maintenance performed on engines because of interim
performance restorations, and full engine overhauls that
take place during the aircraft’s life. Tables 4 and 5 indicate
the likely cost per cycle (one flight) and per flight hour
(each hour and minute the aircraft is airborne). The
former is linked to the engine’s life-limited parts (LLPs),
and the latter to the performance restoration shop visit.
Observing the recent data for the low-cost carrier
(LCC) fleets in Table 6, as well as other airlines, we can
establish some indications of average LCC flight legs. The
table details three major LCCs, each from a different world
region, and their respective average flight sectors during
August 2019.
For the legacy carrier transatlantic routes, Table 7 gives
an indication of some of the routes being performed by
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. All
the city pairings and flight sectors are performed by B757-
200s within these airline fleets. Aside from transatlantic
routes, it is worth mentioning that the A321neo aircraft
entering American Airlines’ fleet are used on some of
American Airlines’ longer transcontinental routes; for

Counterpoint considers that most new-generation singleaisle
aircraft will be with mainstream carriers and LCCs
flying average flight sectors of 1.5 hours. However, there
are also likely to be LCCs flying longer flight
sectors. LCCs, by the nature of their business,
work on slim margins and, in many cases,
fly sectors with low average flight times, meaning up to
10 sectors a day, with minimum airport turnaround times.
These carriers wholly or partly replace their fleets with
more efficient capacity, and some will offer seats with extra
legroom at a cost. The cabin must function as a city
tram or bus, allowing high-density cabin seating
as well as minimal service offerings, and what
is on offer must be delivered from a
functional galley service area.
