E-Jets E2s, according to initial
feedback reported by Widerøe
Airlines, Air Astana and Azul
when they started flying their
E190-E2s and E195-E2s. The
comments were no surprise to the
Brazilian aircraft manufacturer; indeed
the remarks are the same it received when
it hosted groups of very frequent flyers,
cabin staff and airline personnel at its first
E2 cabin mock-up in a hangar near
Farnborough, UK during the aircraft’s
design phase.
What makes the E2 cabin so appealing?
In a word, territory. The common theme
from those focus group sessions was that
passengers want to have greater control
over their domain when they’re seated
next to strangers for several hours. Today,
you’ll find small design elements on
the E2 that make a big difference in the
inflight experience.
The PSUs, for example, are completely
redesigned. Passengers no longer need
to reach across and above the head of a
seatmate to adjust gasper direction and
flow intensity, or turn a reading light on
or off from a central, common panel that
houses everything. Each seat has its own
PSU with individual air vents and light
controls. Every seat has its own power
outlet. Nothing is shared.
Embraer worked with UK design firm,
PriestmanGoode to re-engineer the use of
on-board real estate. The PriestmanGoode
team examined every centimeter of the
first-generation E-Jets cabin and found
opportunities to recover wasted space.

on sectors exceeding four hours flight
time, and the staggered seat layout is
ideal for attracting higher-revenue
customers who value the extra space and
privacy, particularly on long-haul trips.
What’s even more appealing is that the
total number of seats on the E2 is the
same, whether an operator chooses
a staggered or traditional seat layout
in the premium cabin.
E2 also features a cabin management
system and a range of IFE and connectivity
options, including Ka and Ku-bands, and
real-time TV through IPTV.
Oxygen masks were repositioned within
the PSU and the overhead bins were
redesigned – changes that helped to
generate 30% more overhead stowage
capacity.
Embraer knew that ease of cabin
reconfiguration makes any aircraft more
versatile and therefore more appealing to
lessors. Thus the many interior structures
are modular for easier access, simpler
maintenance, and faster changes to
layouts. There is an innovative seat rail
design, including row spacing in half-inch
increments, that runs the entire length of
the cabin. Operators can pitch seats as
they wish, quickly and cost effectively.
The rails also eliminate the need for an
under-seat support so that stowage space
and legroom are maximised.
The most impressive sense of space
is with an optional premium cabin
layout that features staggered seats, an
arrangement typically found on wide-body
jets. Each seat is offset from its pair so
that passengers aren’t sitting side-byside.
