SMART THINKING
Stelia Aerospace’s SmartSeat is ready to take flight, with a connectivity suite that benefits
passenger comfort, as well as operations for cabin crews and maintenance crews
I
t seems as though
everyone is talking
about connectivity, but
Stelia Aerospace prefers to make
things happen. That’s why
visitors to the company’s facilities
in Rochefort, France will know that
for the past two years its innovations
team has been working on a number of
connectivity and high-tech solutions
focused around connected services for
passengers and crew, as showcased
on the SmartSeat demonstrator.
SmartSeat is also an integral part of
the Airbus Connected Cabin Experience
ecosystem, which won the Customer
Journey category of the Crystal Cabin
Awards at APEX in September 2019. The
Airbus Connected Cabin Experience gives
airlines an opportunity to test features
of the Stelia Aerospace connectivity suite.
The next step in the project is to integrate
SmartSeat on the Airbus A350 Flying Lab,
which will be flying in early 2020.
The SmartSeat connectivity suite
comprises three key services, benefitting
passengers, cabin crews and maintenance
crews. Passengers will be able to
experience a more personalised service,
connecting to prior travel preferences
or those selected during booking. As

Additional functionality, available to
test on the Stelia Aerospace SmartSeat
demonstrator, revolves around passenger
wellness to ensure every passenger who
opts in to the service arrives refreshed
and ready for the next stage of the
journey. A personal concierge app
accompanies the traveller during their trip
using preferences (work, relax, sleep) and
real-time physiological data to suggest
the best activity patterns on board.
Whether a mix of work and sleep, or
a flight of pure relaxation, the SmartSeat
helps make each flight their best ever.
Thierry Kanengieser, vice president
of cabin interiors at Stelia Aerospace
explains, “While connectivity surrounds
our daily life, the Business Class Connected
Seat 2.0 will now allow passengers to
enhance their comfort during the flight.
Stelia Aerospace is proud to be at the
cutting edge of digitalisation to create
this new flight travel experience.”

and the passenger experience.
smartphones are becoming ever more
ubiquitous, Stelia Aerospace now provides
smooth seat control from within an app,
allowing passengers to record their
favourite comfort preferences such as
seating position, lighting and cushion
comfort from flight to flight.
Cabin crew will find their workload
lightened with cabin readiness check
assistance tools, including remote
confirmation of the status of passenger
seat belts, seat positions and table
positions. Operational status can also
be communicated in real time, enabling
crew on board and on ground to ensure
that issues can be identified and solved
with minimum client impact.
The suite of services available for
maintenance crews extends beyond
real-time monitoring of seat status
and function. Analytics of seat data
collected over the operation of the
seat will provide advanced warning
of a reduction in performance and give
crews the opportunity to schedule
maintenance when it fits with airline
operations.
As the data is collected, Stelia
Aerospace expects to be able to fine-tune
maintenance intervals and procedures, as
well as optimising operations by working
with customers to tailor seats to their real
passenger usage.
