 Bombardier’s Global 7500 features a circadian
rhythm-based lighting system, which is fully
integrated into the flight management system.
“Not only does it support synchronising
passengers’ body clocks with their destination,
it also offers a multitude of lighting presets
to set the cabin ambiance as desired,” says
 Tim Fagan, manager of industrial
 design at Bombardier Aviation.
 Greenpoint Design’s focus is to
 incorporate lighting as a bespoke
 interior design feature. The
 illumination in the rendering flips
 the reveal, highlighting the walls
 and adding depth.
 “For this challenge, Greenpoint
Design looked for ways to use
 illumination to evoke emotion,
 emphasise grandeur and guide
 our passengers on an unexpected
 journey,” says Annika Wicklund,
 design director at Greenpoint
 Design. “We illuminated the
 typically shadowed bulkhead
reveal, which provides a sense of
 infinity and intricacy. The design
 accentuates strong lines and
 movement, drawing passengers
 down the hallway.”
The goal is to capture lighting
as a material, making it a design
 feature that you could nearly
paint in place, without any of
 the typical constraints of today.
 “One technology we are pursuing
 is electroluminescence,” says
Wicklund. “We are seeing a lot of
 lighting advancements and are
 looking forward to integrating
 technologies such as OLED sheets
 and projected scenes, as accent
 lighting or bespoke features.
 Other exciting technologies are
 emerging that control the lighting
 environment and time scene
 transitions from departure to
 arrival using flight data. These
 human-centric systems guide
inner clocks to reduce jet lag.”
