INFLIGHT AMENITIES
Tips from Kaelis
PLASTIC-FREE AIR EUROPA KIT
In partnership with Kaelis, Air
Europa removed all plastic wrapping
from its business class amenity
kits, which the company estimates
will save 1,000kg of plastic waste
per year.
Air Europa also used this
opportunity to revamp the kit, opting
for a unisex design in soft-touch
leather in a neutral grey tone that is
attractive enough to be reused after
the flight.

THREE TOP TIPS FOR MAKING
AMENITIES MORE SUSTAINABLE.
Recycle plastic, paper and aluminium to the maximum
extent possible. There are so many other possibilities,
including saying goodbye to plastic straws, stirrers,
cutlery, glasses and extra wrapping or packaging, and
using more environmentally friendly materials for
beverage carts, Atlas drawers and amenity kits. New
waste removal methods can also be incorporated,
whereby recyclable materials are sorted more efficiently.
Implement reusable products instead of single-use
products. A quick and easy way to reduce our plastics
footprint is to make the switch to reusable products.
For example, there are many eco-friendly alternatives
to common items such as drinking straws, shopping
bags and cling film. Providing rotable takeaway coffee
cups for crew and guests is a nice touch and can make
a huge difference to waste reduction. There are so many
plastic-free and biodegradable alternatives to toiletries
that it is very easy to make the switch.
Use eco-friendly and ethical crew uniforms and
textiles. There are many ethical, eco-friendly and
practical uniform options on the market, many of
which are very reasonably priced. Look for brands that
use sustainable materials (some are even made from
recycled plastic) and that carry out ethical practices.
Spiriant has been working to make airline amenities
more sustainable. For example, the pouches of its
Conscious Travel collection are made from recycled
bottles, the manufacturing process of which uses
75% less energy in production than virgin plastic. The
contents are also made of sustainable alternatives
wherever possible, including bamboo fabric, and
wax/kraft paper, which is recyclable, luxurious and
pleasant to touch.
For the cosmetics, Spiriant has collaborated with
organic brands that focus on natural products. For
example, Veriphy cosmetics are composed of 95% natural
vegan ingredients and come in recyclable packaging.
Addy Ng, director of amenities design at Spiriant
states, “Airlines need to take a 360° view of
sustainability, including amenities. In the end, it’s
about putting together an amenity kit that conveys our
approach to sustainability and fits passengers’ needs.
Additionally, it’s about creating a kit that passengers
will want to take home and use after their journey.”
GOODY GOODIES
The launch of Virgin Atlantic’s
first A350-1000 was also the
introduction of ‘Goodie Bags’ for
Upper Class and premium economy,
designed to be the most sustainable
amenity kits in the sky. Working
with Galileo Watermark, the kits are
made from responsibly sourced, FSC
certified recyclable kraft paper and
filled with sustainable treats.

items such as eye masks, ear plugs,
dental kits, socks and pens will be

Compared with the airline’s
previous amenity kits, Virgin Atlantic
estimates that Goodie Bags will save
945 tonnes of plastic per year, equal
to the weight of more than six Airbus
A350-1000s.
