With the drive toward a more electric
future, greater investment is going
into developing technologies that
will ensure we create a cleaner planet.

The strategic focus of Miba eMobility,
a solution provider with deep
application know-how and process
knowledge that goes right down to
the raw material, is the
development, production, and supply of
components for electric and hybrid vehicles.
Its products for batteries have already been
successfully introduced to the market. These
include innovative battery cooling and thermal
management solutions and safety components.
Miba eMobility is working with its
customers to deliver innovative products and
solutions in the global shift from combustion
engines to electrical powertrains. Stefan Gaigg,
business unit leader battery, comments,
“Thermal management in electric car batteries
is critical to determine range and longevity,
and is also the key to successful fast charging.”
To fulfi ll these demands, he says a major
industry trend is the move toward liquid
cooling. He reveals that the main challenge
here is in creating an e cient thermal
connection between the battery modules or
cells and the heat sink. “State-of-the-art heat
sinks are thermally connected to the battery
using thermal interface material. Such thermal
interface materials, also known as gap fi llers,
can be added in the form of pastes or pads.
In the end, besides weighing up to several
kilograms, the heat sink and gap fi llers also
result in considerable expense.”
Therefore, Miba’s fl exible heat exchanger,
FLEXcooler, combines interesting material
properties for a completely new heat exchanger
design for liquid-based cooling. Its fl exible
polymer material forms a tight thermal contact
with the battery cell housing. “A key advantage
