Smart material testing
Representatives of the
electric vehicle and automotive
supply chain have requested to
the members of the IPC D-70
E-Textiles Committee for testing
and reliability standards for
e-textiles products subjected to
300V to 450V.
To address this, the E-Textiles
Committee, a group of nearly
200 innovators, manufacturers,
designers, material suppliers,
testing laboratories, and
academicians who develop
open, international standards
for the e-textiles ecosystem,
is breaking ground on a
specifi cation and test methods
for e-textiles products (with
components) used in highvoltage

Impregnation machines for e-motor production
Since 2008, bdtronic
has developed a special
impregnation technology,
which is needed to produce
highly effi cient e-motors.
The mechanical engineering
company based in Weikersheim,
Germany, offers different
machine concepts for
impregnation of hybrid and full
electric motors, especially with
trickling process.
Bdtronic has delivered and
installed several high-volume
machines at German Tier 1
automotive suppliers and several
low-volume impregnation
machines to German OEMs.
The company recently
announced that it will supply
systems for electric motor
production for the Audi Premium
Platform Electric (PPE) and
deliver the fi rst high-volume
production machine for
impregnating e-motors. This
high production machine has a
short cycle time and a very high
production volume.
With more than 4,000
installed machines worldwide,
bdtronic is one of the world‘s
leading machine manufacturers
for dispensing, impregnation, hot
riveting and plasma technology.
Bdtronic provides entire system
solutions for assembly and
production automation to
manufacturers in the automotive,
electric and electronics industry,
medical technology and
renewable energy.

Because the focus of this
standard will be the automotive
industry, in addition to voltage
requirements, this specifi cation
will include simulations of other
conditions encountered during
automobile operations such as
high heat and high vibration.
The group has compiled a list of
automotive OEM test methods
and important key performance
characteristics and seeks the
automotive industry’s input to
validate the characteristics, add
others, identify test methods and
share performance expectations
through an open industry
survey. Using the feedback
from this survey, the group will
outline a draft industry standard
and to identify gaps in industry
test methods.
