The Apex 280 Direct Mate replaces a shielded
header with an all-plastic inner module that
comprises only the male 2.8mm terminal pins
Direct connection
A new solution is able to o er
the HEV/PHEV/EV sector
new opportunities to reduce cost,
enhance design flexibility and
streamline manufacturing for
auxiliary device connections.
The Apex 280 Direct Mate, from
Aptiv and supported by Power &
Signal Group (PSG), a global
distributor dedicated to
the transportation industry, in
contrast to traditional high-power
connections, replaces the shielded
header with an all-plastic inner
terminal module.
Comprising only the male
2.8mm terminal pins and a plastic
holder, this simple interface is
manufactured to the specific
requirements of the application
and installed inside the device.
The crimped female terminals
incorporated in the Apex 280
connect to the inner terminal
module. O ering both bundled
or individual shielding options,
device makers can e ortlessly
implement this connector solution
in auxiliary systems such as airconditioning
units, PTC heaters
and inverters.
Swapping the traditional shielded
header for screwed connections
means that the risk of fretting
corrosion is significantly reduced.
Another key advantage of screwing
direct to the front of the device is
the outstanding V2-rated vibration
performance that is delivered.
Aptiv’s proven Apex 2.8mm
terminals are used, supporting DC
voltages of up to 850V and currents
of up to 40A. Cables ranging from
2.5mm to 6mm can be used and
the device is sealed to IP67, with
finger-proof IP2XB protection.
In addition, the Apex 280 Direct
Mate incorporates an HVIL (High
Voltage Interlock Loop) feature
for safe disconnections.
Characterized by a high degree
of flexibility and manufacturing
e iciency, the product facilitates
both bundled and individual
cable-shielding strategies. It
therefore addresses the needs of
around 90% of the world’s leading
automotive OEMs, right across
North America, Asia and Europe.
That means device makers
can supply numerous di erent
OEM customers with a single,
standardized solution, avoiding
the delays and extra costs that are
incurred when design changes are
needed. High-performance EMC
and RFI shielding is achieved
across both techniques.
With consumer enthusiasm for
vehicle electrification accelerating
fast, and OEM development plans
ramping up at similar speed, the
need to improve a ordability and
secure further build cost reductions
are now priorities throughout the
HEV/PHEV/EV sector. OEMs and
device makers that are keen to
use Apex 280 Direct Mate to help
achieve these goals can also draw
on comprehensive, added value
support from PSG, a company
of Arrow Electronics.
Building on a partnership with
Aptiv that stretches back to 1982,
PSG provides a service portfolio that
extends far beyond the traditional
component distribution model.
For the Apex 280 Direct Mate,
that includes the ability to assist
clients at every stage of the design
and manufacture of inner terminal
modules, or indeed provide a
tailored harness solution fully
assembled to customer needs.
Replacing the shielded header with an all-plastic module offers
more cost-efficient and flexible high-voltage connections
