Dispensing solutions for battery manufacturing
Battery production incorporates
many diverse applications, such
as separator manufacturing,
anode and cathode bonding,
or applying abrasive thermal
management materials. To
enable more effi cient production,
automated dispensing solutions
for 1K or 2K sealant and adhesive
materials are required.
Battery cell bonding of
cylindrical battery cells is
often challenged by production
speed and location accuracy,
as hundreds of cell pockets
must be dispensed into, which
adds robot complexity in small
timeframes. Additionally, square
battery cells often experience
air pockets during a fi ll or pour.
Programmable dispense speeds
allow for mid-shot adjustments
in material fl ow rate, allowing air
to escape from the fi ll. Speed can
be adjusted back to full speed
once the material is past the point
of concern, allowing necessary
production speeds to be achieved.
In battery cell power
distribution applications, the
challenge is to consistently
apply the exact bead size. For
long sealant or adhesive bead
requirements the length may
exceed the volume of the meter
and require material reload,
resulting in a gap or overlap in the
bead. By using continuous-fl ow
meters such as Nordson’s servodriven
metering systems, reloads
are not necessary before the end
of the bead, to help ensure the
perfect application.
Whatever the sealant and
adhesive material dispensing
requirement, battery assembly
solutions must deliver consistent
precision, accuracy and machine
life, with equipment such as from

the right amount every time; even
with highly abrasive materials.
