stadium, while also continuing to play home matches
there during development. This led to IDOM
conceiving an architectural design capable of being
built in stages, making it possible to allow the team
to remain in the same location without disruption.
Following completion, IDOM was later chosen
again to find a solution for the extension of the
stadium’s roof to improve spectator comfort. The
company applied a technically groundbreaking solution
that integrated perfectly with the laureate architecture,
which transformed the stadium.
IDOM also carried out consultancy so that the new
San Mamés Stadium could be a suitable Euro 2020
tournament venue, as well as be capable of staging
the 2018 European Rugby Union finals, the Challenge
Cup and the Champions Cup. As a result, the new San
Mamés Stadium is one of the world’s most highly
regarded venues, renowned for its acoustics and
all-encompassing views that allow all spectators
to take in the atmosphere within the stadium.
Not only have members and fans of Athletic Club
praised the new venue, but it has also been recognized
internationally by winning numerous high-profile
awards. It was the winner at the 2017 Structural Awards
under the Long Span Structures category; the 2017
ACHE Awards (Scientific and Technical Association
of Structural Concrete) under the Roof & Façade
category; the Best Venue Award at the WFS World
Football Summit Industry Awards, and the 2015
WAF Awards.
More projects
As a consequence of the successful design of San
Mamés stadium, IDOM was invited to take part, along
with other teams, in the international competition
for the design and comprehensive renovation of FC
Barcelona’s iconic Nou Camp Stadium. IDOM devised
a proposal that combined respect for the existing
stadium with the required modernity of a 21st century
stadium. This has led to IDOM becoming part of FC
