Yankee Stadium is home to one of the America’s most famous franchises and it was imperative that its new venue captured
the revelry and pride inherent in its history. Inspired by the 1923 Bronx Stadium, the ballpark’s envelope was wrapped in a
four-story limestone and granite façade while its field geometry replicates the original venue.
According to design architects Populous, the overarching intention was to pay homage to the 80-year memory of its
predecessor – affectionately known as ‘the house that Babe built’ – while bringing it up-to-date for today’s modern fan.
Consequently, the US$1.6bn facility relies on a complex IT system to provide new interactive service to fans inside and
outside the stadium. It was one of the first venues to introduce touchscreens for ordering food and merchandise while
interactive video conferencing technology could relay live news, traffic and weather conditions direct to spectators in their
seats. The stadium was quickly adopted by its fan base and its success was reflected in the team, which won the World
Series during the stadium’s inaugural year.
