STADIUM SECURITY
REACH
remium global sporting events attract
a wide variety of people from all over the
world, with many spectators seeing their
attendance as a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity. Unfortunately, because
of their profile, these events are also seen as an
opportunity to cause havoc or take advantage of
a potentially stretched level of security. For example,
the Olympic Games is a high-profile event that is often
a tough test with newly-built venues and villages a
potential target. Therefore the need for technology to
step in and play its role is greater than ever.
But the issue is not limited to the Olympics. Bobby
Chacon, a former FBI agent who was involved in
security for the 2002 and 2004 Winter and Summer
Olympics in Salt Lake City and Athens, says there are
challenges everywhere. “In my experience, the security
measures vary greatly and are often a reflection of how
each individual host country has set up its pre-existing
law enforcement and military apparatus,” he explains.
