A current focus for Meis is to prove that state-ofthe
art doesn’t have to be synonymous with spending
billions of dollars on a new stadium.
“It’s so crazy that in the US right now we are
replacing stadiums that are less than 30 years old.
The average cost of a new 20,000-seat arena is over
US$1 billion and the most recent NFL stadiums are
US$2 billion and more. It’s horribly unsustainable.”
Meis faces a difficult project in Everton’s Bramley
Moore stadium with a much tighter budget and having
to design a build on a challenging site on Liverpool’s
historic docks. Adding to the pressure, Meis also faces
the expectation from Everton fans who voice their
opinions about the project to him on social media.
“I have never had this kind of engagement with
fans who are so passionate and knowledgeable about
the game and the importance of the venue. We will
be moving them from one of the most storied and
intimidating grounds in all of football, so I feel a
huge responsibility to bring the magic of Goodison
Park with us.” n

SMASHING PARTNERSHIP
In addition to the Everton FC and AS Roma venues, Meis is
currently designing new VIP experiences for several LiveNation
venues and has formed a new partnership with Maria Sharapova
to design health, wellness and performance centers. The first
project out of the gate for that partnership is a new multi-purpose
performance pavilion for the historic Riviera Country Club in
Pacific Palisades, CA.
