firms that had given some user input when ShowMatch
was being developed – they wanted to see what guys on
the road deal with on a day-to-day basis. They have a
strong dedication to seeking out input from pros in the
field, it develops supremely market-driven products.
And thanks to this approach, ShowMatch is a system
that meets all the criteria for both installations and
touring, as far as we’re concerned. We knew that
ShowMatch would be the right choice for the Gampel
installation based on performance, weight, size and
other factors. Once we got it installed, we fired it up
and the coverage was even, and it performed exactly
as we expected. The system sounds great, the university
is very happy, and that’s what counts.”
Master of ceremonies
Mario Pregoni, production manager and audio
engineer at Ambient Sound, serves as the house
engineer and overall operator for the system in terms
of gameday activities at the arena. He explains that
program material at the venue varies, which requires
a system to support it. “We have the game announcer
for team intros, play calls and PR reads, and video
content supplied by the team or sponsors. Sometimes
during TV breaks or team time-outs, we have a game
host on the court using wireless mics for fan contests
and also ceremonial events, or it may just be the DJ
playing music to keep the crowd pumped. So, it’s a wide
variety of program material, and the ShowMatch
system is ready for whatever we throw at it. As far
as EQ and processing, I’m able to keep the video and
music inputs pretty flat for the most part, usually just
using high-pass filters if needed. For some of the preproduced
commercial content that comes to us from
production houses I may have to alter the EQ in order
to make it a bit more PA friendly, because those spots
are mixed for TV and not arena systems, and then I’ll
use typical vocal mic EQ curves for announcer
channels. But other than that, the ShowMatch system
does the job we need it to do without a lot of tweaking
on the front end. The ShowMatch system really
maintains the clarity we need for speech and also
delivers a good punch for music without much effort.”
Kaplan concludes, “The experience of working with
Bose Professional has been tremendous – they’ve
helped us meet all the deadlines and have been very
professional. It’s been a really good experience, and the
system sounds amazing. Our fans and student athletes
are in for a real treat this year.” n
Bose ShowMatch provided us everything we were
looking for to meet our production needs in Gampel
Pavilion,” Kaplan adds.
Speaker setup
Bose ShowMatch DeltaQ array loudspeakers are
designed for both installation and portable
applications, with field-changeable waveguides that
help provide the best possible sound quality
throughout the audience area. DeltaQ array technology
optimizes sound quality and vocal clarity by providing
selectable coverage patterns that direct more sound
energy to the audience by allowing directivity to vary
with each array module. Traditional line arrays
typically have significantly less pattern control.
ShowMatch array loudspeakers are available with 5o,
10o or 20o vertical coverage that allows J-array,
constant-curvature, or DeltaQ array configurations.
Conventional line arrays can require up to twice the
box count compared to DeltaQ arrays to achieve
comparable vertical coverage. DeltaQ arrays can
improve sight lines, reduce rigging weight and lower
system costs.
Tom Barrett, owner of Ambient Sound, notes about
the installation: “We worked closely with Bose
Professional to design the system. We actually began
the process before ShowMatch was on the scene, but
we were anticipating its release, as we have a close
relationship with Bose and have worked together
frequently, especially at Gillette Stadium the home
of the New England Patriots. We had been one of the
