apart and put that in. So remoting them to
the scoreboards has been great from a service
perspective. You don’t see them, they’re concealed,
they’re protected from the weather, and I have six
extra drivers up there waiting to go.”
Like Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Empower
Field at Mile High is a world-class destination that
hosts a broad range of major entertainment events
all year round. Another aspect of the LED system
at the stadium is Musco’s proprietary special effects
technology helping to create the latest innovations
in light-show entertainment.
The system uses industry-standard DMX
programming language and light-to-sound
synchronization, allowing the creation of a wide
range of custom shows. For each light show, Musco’s
design engineers can make individual luminaires
pulse to the music by aligning lighting cues with
audio files played through an on-site server, which
allows users to start and stop the shows with an
easy-to-use touchscreen device.
Peace of mind
In addition to the high levels of customization,
the projects at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and
Empower Field at Mile High both also are backed
by decades-long warranties that cover every part
of the system and all labor involved, eliminating
maintenance costs well into the future.
“A long-term warranty was one of the big sales
pitches for my overall organization when it came
to spending the money on this new lighting system,”
said Jay Roberts, general manager at Empower Field
at Mile High. “We were excited about being able to
install a system and not have to worry about it for
the next 10 or 20 years. My electricians are excited
about not having to re-lamp. Going up into that
light rack isn’t all that exciting for most people.
From a budget standpoint we’re excited about not
having to worry about a line item for replacing
bulbs, and are we going to have more this year
than last year. We don’t have to do anything with
this system for 20 years, which is awesome.” n
the LED drivers would be mounted. Whereas
some LED sports lighting systems integrate drivers
directly into the fixtures – requiring technicians
to climb to the lighting rack atop the venue for
servicing – the dedicated electrical rooms eliminate
the need for that altogether and greatly simplify the
maintenance process.
And unlike the previous HID systems, the
new lighting is 100% backed up by uninterruptible
power systems to allow a seamless transfer to match
continuation generators during any unforeseen
power interruptions.
“Musco has specialized in the design and
manufacture of stadium lighting for more than
40 years,” says Matthew Collecott, Tottenham
Hotspur’s director of operations. “The company’s
experience and ability to provide pioneering
solutions for arenas and stadiums around the
world gave us the utmost confidence in its
abilities to deliver the best lighting.”
Empower Field at Mile High
An even more recent example of how important
customized solutions are in the world of LED sports
lighting is Empower Field at Mile High, home to
the Denver Broncos of the NFL.
The Broncos spent two years researching
the evolution of LED technology before making
the move to replace its stadium’s 20-year-old HID
lighting, conferring with other NFL clubs about
different manufacturers before ultimately choosing
to partner with Musco. And there, too, the new
LED solution included a customized design for
the drivers.
This time, the system’s electronics were mounted
inside the two large scoreboards on the upper deck
of the stadium’s north end, greatly simplifying the
process of servicing the drivers when necessary.
“The total-system approach that included
remote drivers was a big deal to us,” says Chris
Hoag, electrical supervisor at Empower Field at
Mile High. “If a driver is integrated or buried in
a fixture somewhere, I’ve got to rip everything
