20 BEST BUILDS
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM
Location: London, UK
Capacity: 62,062
Tenants: Tottenham Hotspur FC
Opened: March 2019
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is not only the biggest club venue in London, but it is also the most
technologically advanced in the country. In a European first, the US$1.3bn venue incorporates a fully
retractable custom built dual playing surface to accommodate soccer and NFL games – the world’s two
most popular sports. It also allows for the stadium to host concerts and other events all year round.
The Populous-designed marvel incorporates uninterrupted sightlines of the action and puts spectators
closer to the pitch than at any comparable ground in the UK. The stands are as steep as UK guidelines
recommend at 35-degrees to create a tighter, more compact stadium bowl with a more intense and vibrant
atmosphere. The venue’s home end was inspired by German soccer side Borussia Dortmund’s Yellow Wall
and features the largest single-tier stand in the UK with 17,500 seats.
Along with a Michelin-star dining experience complete with a cheese master and sommelier, the venue
features an in-house bakery and the world’s first stadium micro-brewery. Its delivery system allows staff
to pour 10,000 pints-a-minute and the brewery is geared to produce one million pints of craft beer a year.
The build, which also features high-tech locker rooms, the latest audio and visual offerings for fans,
digital signage, and a game-changing array of VIP hospitality experiences, was a test for construction
crews as it took place on a busy urban site, next door to the team’s old White Hart Lane Stadium. However,
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy introduced revolutionary new working methods for contractors
to collaborate together, and he himself played an extremely hands-on role in the build.
The result is a venue has set a standard for a modern soccer stadium that’s above and beyond anything
else the world has ever seen.
