DALIAN FOOTBALL TRAINING ACADEMY,
DALIAN, CHINA
AFL Architects has revealed its
winning design for a sprawling
soccer training complex for Chinese
Super League side Dalian Yifang
FC. When complete, it will bid to be
one of the world’s top sport facilities.
Following an international
architectural competition, AFL
Architects was chosen by the Dalian
Wanda group for its impressive
design of the 54-acre (220,000m²),
US$285m, site.
It combines 23 training fields,
a 5,000-seat competition stand,
and separate community facilities
that will support 18 teams and a total
of 600 coaches and athletes.
There are five training complex
buildings with two full-size indoor
playing fields, plus teaching,
rehabilitation, and conference rooms
and other supporting facilities
for the first team, reserves, and
academy teams. In addition to
meeting the needs of professional
football clubs, it will also serve as
a training and competition venue
for local school students.
The buildings, which will house
bedrooms and private areas, have
curving, undulating facades, clad
in stone, glazing and bronze panels,
with interior spaces overlooking
the practice fields to engage and
motivate players. Green roofs and
below-ground water storage support
the environmental and sustainability
aspects of the development.
The training complex is currently
in construction and the design will
provide Dalian Yifang FC with a
holistic environment for the team,
and also a place to nurture and
grow talent from youth and provide
continuity in their development. n
