Gangneung Oval was unveiled in February 2017, ahead
of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, to accommodate
the 2017 ISU Speed Skating World Championship.
Inside this pillarless building, one of the largest in
Korea, Unitech faced the immense challenge of
performing last-minute construction work alongside
test events. Nonetheless, it delivered the project ontime
and within budget.
It envisioned and implemented a prefabricated
stadium structure above ground level. A total of 8,000
seats were also prefabricated, including those for the
general audience, press and VIPs. There is a grandstand
along the 400m-long double-track skating rink,
accompanied by air-conditioning and heating facilities
lying beneath the prefabricated structure. This way,
spectators can enjoy the matches more comfortably
with warm air flowing under each seat. In addition,
the platform is made of aluminium to create a more
refined atmosphere, which also had the advantage of
preventing people from slipping in winter snow or rain.
The Gangneung Oval Stadium was initially
intended as a temporary facility however, it is now
preserved as a semi-permanent stadium at the request
of local communities.
2022 FIFA World Cup,
Al Rayyan Stadium, Qatar
Unitech System has announced that it is working at Al
Rayyan Stadium, Qatar, one of the venues for the 2022
FIFA World Cup to install modular (temporary)
grandstand units.
There are three levels of seating – the first floor is
already occupied by seating units built on concrete, but it
is working on the modular grandstand on the second and
third floors. This 24,000-seat modular grandstand project
is scheduled for completion in December 2019. n
Jamsil Olympic Stadium, Seoul
Mobile outdoor seating was installed for temporary use
on top of the running track at the Jamsil Olympic
Stadium in Seoul, Korea, for Seoul E-Land FC matches,
who play their home matches at the venue. The
temporary seating offers fans a closer view of the
action, overcoming the constraints of the multipurpose
facility. It also offers a significant cost
reduction as the team client can use the existing facility
rather than needing to build a costly, brand new home.
The temporary structure is designed for quick and
easy disassembly to give way to other events, such as
concerts. This feature gives the stadium the ability to
operate as a truly multi-purpose, versatile venue.
Furthermore, the Jamsil Stadium marks Unitech’s firstever
attempt to apply two different types of seating
together in one space (telescopic seating and
prefabricated temporary seating). The front nine rows
are fitted with modular, movable telescopic grandstand
units, while the additional twenty rows behind them
are made up of temporary seats.
This approach reduces the installation and
disassembly time even further when compared to a
structure exclusively made up of prefabricated seating.
For the management point of view, this means even
fewer costs and even more events at the venue. For
track-and-field competitions, one can simply move the
telescopic units into storage and reveal the running
tracks beneath them – this saves game organizers from
the hassle of removing the entire seating.

Grandstand design and solutions have undergone numerous
advances, particularly in regard to fitting in with the
environment. For the Incheon Asian Games, Unitech supplied an
eco-friendly grandstand, which was the first attempt in Korea.
The main stadium for the Incheon Games was built on a long,
narrow strip of land that presented some accessibility issues.
However, it solved the challenge with a futuristic design solution
that blended with the surrounding landscape with a flowing roof
structure that naturally stretches down to the walkway, thereby
enabling quick access for spectators onto the grandstand.
