GAME, SET
 AND MATCH
An audio system upgrade at UConn’s Gampel Pavilion
is able to offer the iconic venue state-of-the-art sound
as well as flexibility to support a variety of events
before the season start. North Haven, CT-based firm
HB Communications and Warwick, RI-based firm
Ambient Sound each collaborated with the UConn
 Athletic Department on the project.
The system includes the following Bose
components: a total of 48 ShowMatch loudspeakers,
eight RoomMatch RMS218 subwoofers and 26
 PowerMatch PM8500N networked power amplifiers.
The scale of the installation, in terms of both physical
footprint and technical complexity, makes it among
the largest Bose ShowMatch systems commissioned
to date. Such a large-scale installation would typically
require electrical lifts during the hang process, but this
was not an option, as there was no accessibility for large
machines. The assembled team worked with a
scaffolding company to build a massive scaffold
infrastructure measuring over 50ft (15m) tall to
 accomplish the installation.
 “It’s a Bose system head-to-toe,” remarks David
Kaplan, assistant director of athletics at the university.
“Our main goals were to enhance our gameday
experience for our fans as well as our student athletes.
he Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is one of
two home venues for University of
 Connecticut (UConn) basketball,
 consistently rated among the powerhouse
programs in the NCAA. The venue is the
centerpiece of the UConn Sports Center and is the
largest on-campus arena in New England, serving both
 men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball
for the UConn Huskies. The facility opened in January
of 1990 and totals more than 171,000ft2 (15,886m2) in
its main area, with a maximum capacity of over 10,000.
It is considered an iconic campus landmark and a
lasting symbol of the successful UConn athletics
program (UConn women’s basketball is the most
successful team in the NCAA, with a record 11 national
championship wins, the most recent in 2016; UConn
men’s basketball is the sixth-most successful, with four
national championships, the most recent in 2014).
Recently, the Gampel Pavilion got an upgrade to
its audio with a brand-new ShowMatch line array
 loudspeaker system from Bose Professional,
commissioned over the summer with plenty of time
